As with the mens health I am going to attack this at two phases. First get my mile down to 5:30 because I think I will be able to do that a lot easier then get my time down from 5:30 to 5 minutes. Plus I will use the 5:30 time as motivation to continue to 5 minutes even.

I am taking the training plan of running repeats.

If I can maintain a 5:30 mile pace for a 1/2 mile. Which means I will be running 1/2 mile repeats in 2:45. In between each, I will rest for 1.5 times that duration, or about 4:07. I will repeat this until I can not perform the 1/2 mile in 2:45. That is it. So the first time I do this, I may just be able to do two repeats. But we will see.

I can just continue to run 1 mile full out and see about lower it a little each time but then I am only training myself to run at that pace - I want to do it much faster.

Since my pacing was off a bit I am going to see about lower the initial 6:42 and get a more accurate idea where I am.

So the next 3 days will be 1 mile best effort and then on the 4th day I will begin the repeats.

So I went out to Country Style and bought a medium Freedom Vinalla coffee - and proceeded to the local YMCA and set up on the treadmill to do my test run.

My time was 6:42.

That is not great - but not exactly horrible either. I had a bit of steam left in the tank where I should have pushed myself more during the last .10 of a mile - I never started pushing myself until about .05 of a mile. I was not sure if I would fizz out at the end or not.

I will post my training plan tommorow.

Although this is a public blog - I am not sure how many people will actually read it - I doubt many, however it is a way for me to record my information and help keep me honest. Comments are greatly appreciated.

So today I decided to kind of make a new years resolution. Not really a resolution though, more of a goal. Also today is the Ukranian Christmas - so Merry Christmas from me to you.

Today I decided to start a training program (inspired by menshealth) in order find out the answer to this question: Can I run a 5 minute mile?

Here's the back story: In high school, I was a pretty good aerobic athlete, I ran sprint but never distance.

Keep in mind that I have not done much aerobic training at all since fall 2002 - when I was in top running shape from track training and then starting police foundations. Since July 06 - I have done very little to no running - as I have been strength training to put on weight.

But why, specifically, did I choose the mile? I took the idea from Mens Health website - as one of the columnists decided to see if he could do it - it inspired me to try the same. As he said, the mile is a bench mark in determining to others if you are fast or not.

A bit about me.

I am 23 year old male - born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - I now live in Edmonton with my fiancee, Aurora Feletti. She is simply amazing - and I love her a lot. I am a college grad in police foundations and law and security - I also have a BS in Criminal Justice from University.

Stats - 6 Foot - currently 175 pounds.

Althetic supplements I am currently taking - creotine - whey protein - power bar triple threat chocolate caramel fusion - multi vitamin - green tea.

Today I am going to do a test run and see how far off I am - we shall see.
